What Does A High End Kitchen Cabinet Look Like?23 January, 2012
Back to Listings
Hello, Lee Hershberger from Harlan Cabinets again with a bit of "buyer beware" for you... High end kitchen cabinets should, for obvious reasons, stand apart from cabinets of lower cost. In this current economic climate there are many low-end, semi- custom cabinet manufacturers that are drawing people in with nice eye candy, but are these cabinets really a better value? Like with most things in life you get what you pay for and high end kitchen cabinets are definitely no different.
Here are a few questions you should be asking yourself before purchasing your kitchen cabinets:
1) How long do I want my cabinets to last?
Bottom line, these "beautiful" low cost cabinets are made with low cost materials. Within a couple of years (in many cases even sooner) you will begin to have issues with finish wear and peal, hinge and drawer guide malfunctions and in time your wood may even begin to split. With a high end kitchen cabinet manufacturer like Harlan Cabinets you can rest easy knowing that your cabinets, if properly maintained, should last the lifetime of your home.

2) How important is organization and function?
Many a chain store employee has lead an unsuspecting customer astray on kitchen cabinet design and layout. There is a very real flow to cooking and organization that one misplaced cabinet, sink or appliance can put a dampener on. Harlan Cabinets employs trained professionals that are up to date on all the latest and greatest. We know what's hot! But keep in mind that we're celebrating our 50th year, so we can usual put our finger on what trends are here to stay and which ones are nothing more than a fad.

3) How important is flexibility?
All semi - custom cabinets are built to the 3" mark. So lets say you have a space that can take a 17 3/4" cabinet, guess what? You'll get a 15" cabinet and a 2 3/4" blank filler. This little cut in cabinet size could mean the difference between having a pull out waste basket exactly where you want it or moving it all together from the area you intended... And what a waste of 2 3/4" of precious storage space! With a high end kitchen cabinet you get them sized to the 1/16 of an inch. Need 17 3/4"? No problem! We cut to the size you need to optimize any space you're trying to fill.

4) Does personalization matter?
Granted there are some choices in the semi- custom cabinet market, but these choices are very limited. With a high end custom kitchen manufacturer the sky is the limit. For instance, color match stains and varnish are not a problem (we recently matched a ladies purse), we can recreate matching pieces (doors, trim, entire cabinets) from antiques and other family heirlooms, we also have literally thousands of decorative hardware, wood corbels, posts, columns, and appliqués to choose from. With this number of choices there is zero chance of anyone mistaking your cabinetry for a run of the mill, cookie-cutter kitchen.
